We have for sale on behalf of a client this rare Franz Oehrlein automaton organ. These instruments are rare in England and will be of interest to the discerning organ collector for a private collection, or a museum looking for a premium exhibit.
Franz Oehrlein (1932 - 2013) was a master craftsman from Mainz, Germany, who produced only a few instruments in each style due to the immense care and quality of the engineering involved in each build. Each style built, effectively became a limited edition and these automaton organs are prized by private collectors and rarely come on the market.
This organ automaton has been part of a private collection for many years; it had a minor repair and service by ourselves in March this year and is in playing condition with 13 tune books. The organ was built in 1983 and is serial number 10. The automaton organ is only coming to market as a very reluctant sale due to the age of the owner who has been reducing his collection in recent times.
Franz Oehrlein was a self-taught craftsman who originally trained as a hairdresser taking over the family business. However he had a deep fascination with mechanical music and engineering which led to him pursuing the highly specialised path of organ building and automaton building in the 1970s. He set up a specialised workshop in his basement in Mainz where he produced his creations.
Franz was an honorary member of the German GSM (Gesellschaft fur Selbstspielende Musikinstrumente) society. He also gifted several of his prized private automata to the Museum fur Musikautomaten in Seewen, Switzerland.
