For Sale Ref GRC231024/2042
On behalf of our client we have for sale one of the most unique and original sets of gallopers in preservation. This is a once in a generation opportunity to purchase such a famous historical ride.
Built by Savages of Kings Lynn in 1920, the ride was one of the last sets built by the company, and today survives as a shining example of the golden age of the British fairground.
The ride was ordered in late 1919 by George Thomas Tuby of Doncaster, one of Britain's most successful showmen of the day and so began the story of the aptly named 'Victory Horses.' The ride's decoration, mostly by Orton and Spooner, the renowned fairground carvers, was apt given the period of its creation. The flags of the allied nations adorned the rounding boards, and a dove of peace featured on the pay box. The ride has always been noted for its fine set of horses.
The ride made their debut at Kings Lynn in 1920 and travelled with the Tuby family for 10 years, hauled by their fleet of distinctive blue Burrell showman's engines. In 1934 it was purchased by Thomas Drakeley of Stechford. In 1946 the ride passed to Midlands's showman Robert Wilson and travelled extensively under his ownership.
In 1963 the ride was passed to its last commercial operator Mr Raymond Beardow. For the 1964 season it was moved to the fairground at Woburn Abbey, until 1992 when it was moved to Brean Leisure Park.
In 1998 the ride was acquired by a collector and was carefully refurbished and restored preserving originality, it made its debut in restored condition in 2004 at the Ackworth Historic Vehicle and Steam show.
In 2015 the ride was placed on long term loan to the Fairground Heritage Trust, where it has been operated as a functional exhibit in the Museum and has formed one of the central attractions.
Today the ride survives largely unchanged from its original form, but with evidence from each stage of its long and interesting history carefully preserved. This ride would enhance any collection making a perfect show exhibition piece to any museum or private collection.
The ride is complete, working and includes packing trucks.
